To be completely honest with you, I was a little frightened of this theme. I am very proud to be an American, but I worry about using red, white and blue and getting too cheesy with it. Trust me, I come from a long line of cheese balls, so not many things are too cheesy for me. But, I have absolutely loved browsing through the posts and seeing the amazing aprons that have been created using the patriotic theme. Way to go, ladies!
It was hard for me to find the right fabric to use for this apron. The teeny red and blue stars on the white background really jumped off the bolt at me. The idea of adding the rick-rack came on a whim as I was laying out the cut pieces. The rick-rack is small. Hopefully it doesn't make the apron too busy. I altered a dress pattern I have to make the apron. It ties in the back at the waist and neck. I tried to make it a little more flirty by having it hit about mid-thigh and plunging a bit on the top. I had considered ruffles or lacy stuff, but it just didn't work with the fabric. I am really pleased with the result.
When I showed it to my boyfriend he smiled and started singing "You're a Grand Old Flag." I think it was a compliment. It is my favorite patriotic song.
